Women's Hockey Shuts Out Neumann, 5-0

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Nine different Hawks tallied a point as the Saint Anselm women's hockey team completed a two-game sweep of Neumann Sunday afternoon, defeating the Knights 5-0 at Sullivan Arena.

The Hawks, who also beat Neumann (0-2-0) Saturday afternoon, 1-0, took control early again on Sunday with heavy puck possession. Saturday, Saint Anselm pounded the Knight goaltender with 66 shots on goal and nearly repeated that effort Sunday with a 65-shot performance.

Sophomore Alex Starzyk (Enfield, Conn.) led off the scoring for the second straight game, notching her second goal of the season in the fifth minute of the first period to open the floodgates for the Hawks. Her right post game-winner game off assists from junior Halle Kent (Lake Placid, N.Y.) and junior Marianne Kristiansen (Anchorage, Alaska), who each tallied their first points of the season.

Freshman defenseman Jackie Guy (St. Louis, Mo.) made it 2-0 off assists from senior Tiffany Herron (Clinton Township, Mich.) and freshman Ashley Moran (Woburn, Mass.). Just a minute and a half later, sophomore Alison Quinn (Canton, Mass.) put away her first goal of the season off a Starzyk assist to take a 3-0 lead into the second intermission.

The Hawks tallied two more scores in the third—the first coming off a Herron find on the left edge of the crease and the second on an unassisted crack from sophomore Meaghan Spurling (Byfield, Mass.) who put it right post to cap off the scoring. Junior Alex Kazmer (Crystal Lake, Ill.) assisted on Herron's first tally of the season as the Hawks cruised to the win.

Twelve different players were on the ice during the scoring plays, led by Guy and Kazmer who were +3 on the day.

Senior Hannah Synnott (Montclair, N.J.) got the start in goal for the Hawks Sunday, tallying 12 saves and recording the win between the pipes.

The Hawks will return to Sullivan Arena next weekend to open league play with a pair of ECAC Women's East matchups. Friday, Saint Anselm will host Franklin Pierce in a 4 p.m. intrastate matchup before hosting Saint Michael's in a Saturday matinee. Both games will be played as the opener of a men's and women's hockey double-header.
