MANCHESTER, N.H. – Senior forward Tiffany Herron (Clinton Township, Mich.) nailed the game-winning goal top shelf with just 5.6 seconds remaining in the third period as Saint Anselm women's hockey escaped a great battle from Saint Michael's Saturday afternoon to win 2-1.
Sophomore Meaghan Spurling (Byfield, Mass.) sent a shot into the zone that ricocheted off the Saint Michael's goaltender as the seconds ticked away. Herron then found the puck on her stick and laced the deciding score just below the pipe.
Senior defenseman Franny Nicholson (St. Paul, Minn.) opened the day's scoring near the midpoint of the first period, connecting on a Herron and junior Alex Kazmer (Crystal Lake, Ill.) pair of assists for a power play goal—her first of the season.
The Purple Knights evened the game with a tally in the second period on an Amanda Kempainen goal. That goal at the 6:15 mark was the first blemish for senior Lindsey Brown (Mounds View, Minn.) on the season, who finished the game with nine saves and improved her season record to 2-0 between the pipes.
This weekend's pair of wins maintain a pretty impressive streak for Saint Anselm, which kept its unbeaten 24-game win streak against the Purple Knights intact following Saturday's win. Friday, the Hawks' victory over Franklin Pierce improved their record against the Ravens to 5-0 all-time, combining for a 29-0 program record against this past weekend's opponents.
The Hawks will venture away from the friendly nest-like confines of Sullivan Arena this upcoming weekend, traveling to Holy Cross and Southern Maine for a weekend road trip. The Hawks will kick off the tour Friday with a 7 p.m. matchup against the Crusaders.
