Amherst slips past women’s hockey, 3-2

AMHERST, Mass. – Saint Anselm College overcame a two-goal second period deficit, but fell 3-2 on the road at #5/5 Amherst College on Wednesday night in non-conference women's ice hockey action at the Orr Arena in Amherst, Mass. The Hawks fall to 16-4-0 overall, while Amherst improves to 14-1-3.

The two teams played to a 0-0 draw in the opening period as Saint Anselm held a 12-4 advantage in shots in the frame. Hannah Synnott (Montclair, N.J.) stopped all four shots she faced in the period.

Eileen Harris opened the scoring for Amherst only 12 seconds into the second period as she tapped home a rebound to put the Purple and White on top 1-0. Erin Martin and Alex Toupai each picked up assists on the play. Amherst extended their lead to 2-0 three minutes later as Harris scored again on a rebound, this time from her knees.

Saint Anselm pulled to within one 15:18 into the frame as Alex Starzyk (Enfield, Conn.) took a pass from Alison Quinn (Canton, Mass.) and fired a shot from in front of the net and potted a goal into the bottom left corner of the net to make it a 2-1 game headed into the final period of play.

Meaghan Spurling (Byfield, Mass.) found the equalizer late in the third period when she rifled a slap shot off the stick of the Amherst goalie and into the back of the net to make it a 2-2 game. Caley Mueller (Littleton, Colo.) picked up an assist on the play as well.

Just over two minutes later, Alex Toupai netted the game-winning goal as she won a scrum at mid-ice, beat two defenders, then scored on the backhand with 1:22 remaining in the game. The Hawks could not get a shot off in the final minute of the game as Amherst hung on for the 3-2 win.

Saint Anselm held a 37-25 edge in shots on goal while going 0-for-2 on power play chances and killing all three chances for Amherst. Hannah Synnott suffered the setback while making 22 saves, while Amherst's Sabrina Dobbins earned her 12th win of the season by stopping 35-of-37 shots.

The Hawks travel to the University of New England on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. for a New England Hockey Conference matchup with the Nor'Easters.
