NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Seventh-ranked Norwich got goals from five different skaters to overcome two goals from Kaitlyn Spillane and defeat the Saint Anselm College women's hockey team 5-2 in New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) action on Friday night at Kreitzberg Arena.
In a battle of unbeaten teams in NEHC play entering the night, Norwich (3-0-0, 3-0-0 NEHC) took a 2-0 lead after a period before Saint Anselm (3-1-0, 3-1-0 NEHC) tied the game through a pair of Spillane goals in the second. However, the Cadets scored in the final minute of period two and added two in the third to claim the win.
The Cadets, ranked No. 7 in the country this week by D3hockey.com, opened up a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes behind a power-play goal from Sophie McGovern and a goal from Adelle Murphy.
After being outshot 11-7 in the first period, the Hawks controlled the second period and tied the game at 2-2 thanks to Spillane's two goals. The junior scored the first of her two power-play goals just 42 seconds into the frame from Alex Starzyk and Alison Quinn before adding a second unassisted at 14:11.
On Spillane's opening goal, she corralled a rebound off of a Quinn shot and fired a wrist shot into the back of the net. Later in the period, she scored on a wrist shot that bounced off the inside of the left post and in after knocking down a Norwich clearing attempt.
Despite being outshot 14-5 in the period, the Cadets broke the tie in the final minute of the second on Sarah Schwenzfeier's game-winning goal at 19:12. Norwich went on to add third-period goals from Amanda Conway at 12:15 and one from Brynn Wopperer at 18:35 to provide the final margin.
Hannah Synnott made 18 saves for Saint Anselm and suffered her first loss of the season, while Celeste Robert improved to 2-0-0 by making 26 stops for Norwich. Shots for the game were 28-23 in favor of the Hawks.
Saint Anselm hosts Sacred Heart to start a hockey doubleheader on Saturday, Nov. 12 at Sullivan Arena. The Hawks and Pioneers start at 1 p.m. followed by the men's team against Saint Michael's on Smith Family Weekend.
