BRUNSWICK, Maine – Maura Kieft scored both goals as the Saint Anselm College women's hockey team extended its unbeaten streak to six games with a 2-2 tie against Bowdoin on Saturday afternoon at Watson Arena.
Bowdoin (2-0-2) opened up a 2-0 lead early in the third period before Saint Anselm (8-1-1) battled back on Kieft's two goals, both set up by Kaitlyn Spillane. Spillane found Kieft late in the second period and near the midpoint of the third as the two teams settled for a tie, as Kieft tallied her second two-goal performance of the season.
The Polar Bears struck first 8:17 into the opening period as Katie Leininger poked in a Jill Rathke pass to put the hosts in front with Maureen Greason also earning an assist. Bowdoin maintained a 1-0 lead until Julie Dachille finished off a short-handed break with Brooke Solomon at 3:16 of the second period to double the Polar Bears' lead.
Late in the second, Kieft cut the Bowdoin lead in half with her first goal of the night at 15:48 as Spillane's shot was deflected into the air and Kieft deflected it into the net. Saint Anselm held a 10-3 advantage in shots in the second period but the Polar Bears held onto a 2-1 lead after 40 minutes.
Kieft's second goal came at 12:35 of the third period after Spillane collected a loose puck off the back boards, found Kieft with a centering pass to the low slot and the sophomore buried it to tie the game. Saint Anselm accounted for all five shots in the overtime session but was unable to find a game-winner.
Maddie Scavotto remained unbeaten this season (6-0-1) after making 14 saves, as Saint Anselm held a 35-16 advantage in shots in the game. Sophia Lattanzio made 33 stops for the Polar Bears but suffered the loss.
Saint Anselm travels to Colby on Tuesday, Dec. 6 for a 7 p.m. non-conference game.
