MANCHESTER, N.H. – Head coach Kerstin Matthews and the Saint Anselm College women's ice hockey program announced the team's schedule for the 2018-19 season on Monday.
Saint Anselm will play a total of 30 games this winter, highlighted by a trip to Minnesota in early January that includes a game at TRIA Rink, the new practice facility of the National Hockey League's Minnesota Wild. The Hawks will play 14 times on their home ice at Sullivan Arena, where they are 53-7-6 (.849) over the last five seasons.
"Our schedule starts off with a unique experience to play both Brown and Yale in the same night," Matthews said. "I look forward to seeing how our young team battles against a very challenging non-conference schedule. The team will really need to push to be prepared for our 30-game schedule this year, but we are also very excited about returning to Minnesota and playing two top opponents."
Saint Anselm's season opener is a weekend series at reigning New England Women's Hockey Alliance (NEWHA) Tournament champion Sacred Heart on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 19-20. The Pioneers defeated the Hawks, 3-1, in last season's inaugural NEWHA Tournament title game at Sullivan Arena. Following a pair of exhibition games, Saint Anselm travels to Plymouth State on Saturday, Oct. 27 to face the Panthers to round out the month.
In November, the Hawks face in-state foe Franklin Pierce in a home-and-home series on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 2-3 prior to hosting Post the next weekend. After traveling to Saint Michael's in the middle of the month, Saint Anselm has a 10-day gap between games before a game at Williams on Wednesday, Nov. 28.
Saint Anselm plays three times in the first eight days of December before being off until the New Year. The Hawks travel to Bowdoin, one of just three teams to defeat Saint Anselm last season, on Saturday, Dec. 1 prior to hosting Franklin Pierce (Dec. 4) and Wesleyan (Conn.) four days later.
On Thursday and Friday, Jan. 3-4, the Hawks return to Minnesota for the first time since January 2015 for games against Hamline and St. Scholastica. Saint Anselm starts the trip against the Pipers, who defeated Plattsburgh State to win the third-place game at the NCAA Division III Women's Ice Hockey Championship, at TRIA Rink before taking on the Saints the next night. The Hawks split a series at St. Scholastica in January 2015 and swept the Saints in Manchester the following season.
After returning to the Northeast, Saint Anselm hosts non-conference foes UMass Boston (Jan. 11) and Connecticut College (Jan. 22) on either side of a game at Franklin Pierce (Jan. 18) in mid-January. The remainder of the month includes a weekend series at Post (Jan. 25-26) and a home date with Salem State (Jan. 29).
In the final month of the regular season, the Hawks have four-straight NEWHA home games to start February, hosting Saint Michael's (Feb. 1-2) and Sacred Heart (Feb. 8-9). Coach Matthews' team concludes the regular season with a pair of games at Colby on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 15-16.
