MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College women's ice hockey team picked up some momentum in an exhibition contest against the reigning NCAA Division III National Champions from Norwich University, downing the Cadets 2-1 from Sullivan Arena.
After a scoreless first period, the Hawks took a 1-0 lead in the second period. Sophomore Gabby Monaco (La Verne, Calif) sent a shot towards the net and senior Caley Mueller (Littleton, Colo.) tipped the puck behind the goalie at 2:25 of the frame. Freshman Erin Meyers (Saint Paul, Minn.) also had an assist on the play, setting up Monaco at the point.
The Cadets were able to answer at 11:15 of the second. Bryn Labbe skated around the defense and found the back of the net for the equalizer. Amanda Conway dished out an assist on the play.
The Hawks had a chance to take the lead on the power play at 12:16 of the third. However, the extra-player opportunity was not needed as junior Kaley Campbell (Colchester, Vt.) put away the game-winning goal with 15:44 gone in the second period.
Saint Anselm killed off a pair of penalties to end the second. The third period saw 10 shots combined with the Hawks having a 6-4 edge. Norwich had to kill off three penalties in the period while the Hawks were able to keep the Cadets at bay on two power play chances in the third, including one with 2:19 remaining in the game.
Junior Michaela Kane (Haverhill, Mass.) had 17 saves in net for Saint Anselm. A tandem of Norwich netminders made 14 saves. The Hawks killed off all eight penalties in the game.
Saint Anselm returns to action on Friday, Oct. 26 at 4 p.m. against Manhattanville College in an exhibition contest from Sullivan Arena.
