MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College women's ice hockey team skated to a 5-1 victory over Sacred Heart University on Saturday at Sullivan Arena.
Saint Anselm improves to 22-2-1 on the season, closing the New England Women's Hockey Alliance regular season with a 15-0-1 mark against league foes. Sacred Heart drops to 18-7-4 and to 7-4-3 against NEWHA teams after posting back-to-back losses to the Hawks on Friday and Saturday.
Freshman Erin Meyers (Saint Paul, Minn.) had two goals and an assist for three points (2-1=3) and exits play with at least one point in six of her last seven games (4-6=10). Sophomore Katy Meehan (Quincy, Mass.) chipped in with two assists in the winning effort and senior backstop Maddie Scavotto (East Falmouth, Mass.) made 16 saves on 17 shots, picking up the win in goal.
Sophomore Gabby Monaco (La Verne, Calif.) is riding a seven-game point streak exiting play, having tallied three goals and five assists for eight points (3-5=8) since her team's 10-0 win over Post on Jan. 25.
Meyers opened the scoring with an unassisted goal with 12:52 to go, carrying the puck coast-to-cast and deking past several defenders in the process. She would later start the scoring play that saw freshman Kelly Golini (Tewksbury, Mass.) pot her 13th goal of the season under five minutes later, giving the Hawks a 2-0 lead after the first 20 minutes.
Meyers' fifth goal of the season was the lone second period goal as she was set up by freshman Amanda Nylander (Hanover, Minn.) and junior Haley Marshall (Hull, Mass.) with 1:14 to go. For Nylander, she now is riding a three-game point streak, having scored three goals and two assists since Feb. 2 against Saint Michael's.
Katie Stueve scored for Sacred Heart with 10:59 left in the third quarter, but back-to-back goals from junior Amanda Conger (Swanton, Vt.) and junior Jamie Gottwald (Easton, Mass.) on the power play added insurance late in the game. Meehan set up each of those goals, with Monaco and Conger adding third-period assists.
Sarah Erban yielded five goals on 28 shots, drawing the loss for Sacred Heart. The Pioneers were outshot by a 31-17 margin and were 0-for-5 with the extra skater. Saint Anselm had two goals out of their five opportunities on the power play.
The Hawks will play back-to-back games on the road at Colby starting this Friday, Feb. 15 at 4 p.m. The regular season will conclude on Saturday, Feb. 16 at 12 p.m.
