MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The Saint Anselm College women's ice hockey team went outside New England Women's Hockey Alliance (NEWHA) play on Friday evening to capture a 5-2 victory over the Wesleyan University (Conn.) Cardinals at Spurrier-Snyder Rink.
The Hawks tallied their seventh-straight win and improve to 10-3-0 overall and snapped the Cardinals three-game winning streak. Wesleyan (Conn.) dropped to 3-3-0 on the year. The Hawks wrap up the 2019 portion of their schedule with another road contest at Manhattanville on Saturday, Dec. 7 at 4 p.m.
Saint Anselm wasted little time getting on the board, when sophomore Kelly Golini (Tewksbury, Mass.) scored just above the goaltender's shoulder at the 3:56 mark. The Hawks extended the lead later in the period at 8:37 when sophomore Amanda Nylander (Hanover, Minn.) scored on a power play to make it 2-0.
Saint Anselm increased its advantage to 3-0 with 17:54 expired. Junior Mary Lambert (Plaistow, N.H.) sent a shot towards the Cardinal netminder and junior Jayden Young (Norwood, N.Y.) was there to one time the rebound for the shorthanded tally.
Wesleyan responded just 38 seconds later, cutting the deficit to 3-1.
Out of the second intermission, junior Katy Meehan (Quincy, Mass.) one-timed a shot from the doorstep, increasing the score to 4-1. The Hawks extended their lead at the 16:32 mark when Golini lifted the puck over Allegra Grant's shoulder glove-side for her second tally of the game.
Wesleyan responded with two minutes remaining when Bridget Cornell fired a shot from just inside the blue line to make the final 5-2.
Grant made 24 saves in goal for Wesleyan, while freshman Caroline Kukas (North Andover, Mass.) stopped 23 shots to earn the win for Saint Anselm. Kukas remains undefeated in her first collegiate season with a 4-0-0 record. Golini and freshman Kenadie Cooper (Gilbert, Ariz.) earned five faceoff victories on the day.
