RYE, N.Y. – The Saint Anselm College women's ice hockey team wrapped up the 2019 calendar year with a 3-2 loss to Manhattanville College on Saturday afternoon at Playland Ice Casino.
The Hawks ended their seven-game winning streak on Saturday as they drop to 10-4 in the 2019-20 campaign. The Valiants improve to 6-3-1 on the year. The Hawks flip the calendar over to the 2020 part of the schedule as they travel to Princeton, ranked sixth in the latest Division I USCHO national poll, on Friday, Jan. 3 at 3 p.m.
Tied at two heading into the final five minutes of regulation, Tianna Lopes of the Valiants scored the eventual game-winning goal at 16:01 to put Manhattanville ahead. Saint Anselm could not convert on any of its late opportunities as Manhattanville earned the 3-2 triumph.
Junior Gabby Monaco (La Verne, Calif.) opened the Hawks scoring in the first period as she gave the Hawks a 1-0 lead at 12:49. The Hawks would lead until Taylor Ham buried a power-play goal at 10:41 of the second period.
Two minutes later, Manhattanville's Ashley DeFusco provided the Valiants their first lead of the game on a power-play opportunity, giving the hosts a 2-1 advantage. Junior Katy Meehan (Quincy, Mass.) found the equalizer 28 seconds before the buzzer rang for the end of the second period, extending her point scoring streak to six games. Meehan also registered her 40th career goal in the process.
Senior Michaela Kane (Haverhill, Mass.) finished the contest with 22 saves, yielding three goals. Lena Flores earned her first win of the season, stopping 34 shots for the Valiants.
Despite getting outscored, the Hawks led in the shots category, 36-25. Sophomore Kelly Golini (Tewksbury, Mass.) led the team in faceoff victories with eight.
