#15 Women’s Lacrosse Comeback Falls Short in 10-9 Loss at #10 Le Moyne

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Sophomore Erin Marshall (Woburn, Mass.) scored three goals, including two in the final five minutes to help cut the deficit from six to one, but the 15th-ranked Saint Anselm College women's lacrosse team was edged by No. 10 Le Moyne College, 10-9, Saturday afternoon at Ted Grant Field.

The Hawks dip to 10-3 on the season, including 7-3 in Northeast-10 play, while the Dolphins better their record to 10-4, 7-3 NE-10.

Saint Anselm trailed 10-4 with just over 12 minutes to play in the contest when a free-position goal from junior Kelly Pickett (Chelmsford, Mass.) and another free-position strike from sophomore Caitlin Villareal (Portsmouth, R.I.) just 28 seconds later sliced the deficit to 10-6.

The game stayed that way until Marshall potted her second of the contest with 4:51 remaining. Sophomore Katie McKenna (Danvers, Mass.) then set up a tally from junior Marissa Daly (Marshfield, Mass.) to close the gap to 10-8. Marshall buried her second unassisted goal in less than two minutes to make it 10-9 with 2:58 left, but that was as close as the Hawks would get as Le Moyne won the ensuing draw control and ran out the clock.

Le Moyne held a 23-21 edge in shots, including 11-5 in the first half, and also owned a decisive 15-6 margin in draw controls. The Hawks were 3-for-5 on their free-position chances, while the Dolphins went 2-for-6.

Le Moyne jumped out to an early lead as Marley Ciferri and Amari Pollard scored goals just 14 seconds apart to go up 2-0 with 24:01 remaining. Junior Kaitlyn Stazinski (Pembroke, Mass.) connected on a pass to classmate Sarah Doherty (Franklin, Mass.), who found the back of the net to put Saint Anselm on the board with 21:37 to play.

Victoria Nies answered for the Dolphins at the 18:32 mark, but Marshall potted her first 2:22 later to keep the Hawks within one. Ciferri scored her second of the game with 15:00 left to close the first-half scoring with Le Moyne up, 4-2.

Le Moyne grabbed a four-goal lead on tallies by Claire Monnat and Pollard, but Villareal and Daly answered with strikes that kept Saint Anselm within two at 6-4 with 21:54 to play. The Dolphins followed by scoring four goals, including two from Kathleen Conese, in less than four minutes to seemingly grab control of the contest, but the Hawks would make their final run to climb back in it.

Sophomore goalkeeper Jane Bunn (St. John's, Fla.) turned away five of the nine shots she faced in the first half of play, while junior Allee Ramzi (Cumberland, R.I.) stopped 4 of 10 shots in the second frame. Molly Marbut made seven saves for the Dolphins.

The Hawks return to action Tuesday, April 22 at 7 p.m. as they travel to take on 13th-ranked Stonehill College. The next and final regular-season home game for the Hawks is Saturday, April 26 at 1 p.m. when they play host to Southern Connecticut State University on Senior Day at Grappone Stadium.
