Sheehy matches program point record, Hawks top Tampa

TAMPA, Fla.Meaghan Sheehy recorded six goals and four assists to match the program record with 10 points as the Saint Anselm College women's lacrosse team recorded its second-straight victory by defeating the University of Tampa 17-10 on Thursday at Naimoli Field.

Sheehy tallied two goals and four assists in the opening half as Saint Anselm (2-1) got out to a 10-4 lead at the break. After the break, the junior helped the Hawks maintain at least a four-goal lead over Tampa (4-4) by netting four goals to tie Marissa Daly's 10-point performance at American International College on March 22, 2014.

In addition to Sheehy's big day, Rachel Henderson scored a career-high five goals and Erica Mattila had two goals and two assists. Madison Shea tallied the first two goals of her career, while Breda Holland picked up her first collegiate points with a goal and an assist.

Zoie Cavotta earned the win with five saves in goal for the Hawks. Cavotta and Lauren Lockard each grabbed three ground balls, Emma Palumbo snared five draw controls and Liv Connly and Becca Shea each caused two turnovers for the Hawks.

Henderson and Tampa's Claire Swanson traded goals in the opening three minutes of the game before Saint Anselm rattled off four-straight goals to take command. Free-position goals from Mattila and Shea bookended the spurt around a pair of goals by Sheehy.

After the Spartans scored the next goal, the Hawks again went on a run, scoring five consecutive goals to break the game open with a 10-2 lead. Sheehy set up Henderson for the first two goals of the run and scored three of the spurt's five goals. Tampa grabbed the final two goals of the half to make it a 10-4 game at the break.

The Spartans gradually fought their way back in the second half to get within 14-10 with 10:25 remaining by outscoring the Hawks 6-4 in the first 20 minutes of the second half. However, Saint Anselm scored the game's final three goals through Sheehy, Holland and Mattila to win the first-ever meeting between the two programs.

For the game, Tampa held slight leads in shots (22-20) and draw controls (15-14), while both teams committed 15 turnovers. Saint Anselm was 11-for-13 on clears compared to 6-for-6 for Tampa.

The Hawks conclude their trip to Florida by taking on Slippery Rock University at 12 p.m. on Saturday, March 11 at Northeast Regional Park.
