COLCHESTER, Vt. – The Saint Anselm College women's lacrosse team pulled away in the second half to down Saint Michael's College 12-7 on Wednesday afternoon at Duffy Field in Northeast-10 Conference action.
The Hawks improve to 4-1 on the year and 2-0 against NE10 opponents while the Purple Knights drop to 1-3 overall and 0-3 in league play. Saint Anselm moves to 13-10 over Saint Michael's in the all-time series and have won 10 of the last 11 games, including six of seven at Duffy Field.
Saint Anselm was led by senior Molly Beck (Old Saybrook, Conn.), who had four points (3-1=4). She extended her point streak to eight games dating back to Apr. 25, 2018. Sophomore Annie Richards (Reading, Mass.) had three points (1-2=3).
The Hawks built a 2-0 lead in the first 3:01 of the game. Beck put the visitors up 1-0 in the first minute and then assisted on Saint Anselm's second goal. Sophomore Kelsey Czarnota (Wakefield, Mass.) received a pass in front of the net and fired a shot through a crowd of defenders around her to make it 2-0.
Morey extended the lead to three with just over five minutes gone in the game with an assist from Richards, forcing a timeout by the Purple Knights.
After Saint Anselm caused a turnover with 22 minutes to play in the first half, Holland raced down the field and made it 4-0 in favor of the Hawks.
After some back-and-forth play over the next several minutes, the Purple Knights scored the next three goals of the game. Alex Vincent scored with 17:34 remaining in the opening half, before Kaitlyn Waystack cut the lead in half 1:45 later. Vincent scored her second tally of the game to bring Saint Michael's within a goal with 10:43 to play in the first half.
Freshman Jenna Balboni (Billerica, Mass.) put the Hawks back up by a pair of goals 8:31 to play in the half. Each team scored twice in the final seven minutes of the first half with the Hawks taking a 7-5 lead into the break.
The Purple Knights struck first just before the five minute mark of the second half on a tally by Erin Mikson to make it 7-6 in favor of the road team. However, the Hawks scored the next four goals to build an 11-6 advantage with just over 20 minutes to play. Beck scored twice while Cobain and Morey also found the back of the net in that span.
Saint Anselm doubled its lead with 17:32 to play as Richards picked up her first goal of the contest. The Purple Knights added a goal with 12:02 to play, making it 12-7 in favor of the Hawks.
Junior Bailee Pudvar (Shelburne, Vt.) stopped nine shots in net for the Hawks to pick up her fourth win of the season. Victoria Putnam made five saves for the Purple Knights and suffered the loss. Saint Michael's held a 28-24 edge in shots, but the Hawks had a slim 17-16 margin in shots on goal. The Purple Knights had an 11-10 edge in draw controls.
Saint Anselm returns to Grappone Stadium on Saturday, Mar. 23 to host American International at 2 p.m.
