MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College women's lacrosse team picked up its fifth win in a row, downing American International College 18-6 on Saturday afternoon at Grappone Stadium in Northeast-10 Conference play.
The Hawks improve to 5-1 overall and 3-0 against NE10 opponents while the Yellow Jackets fall to 2-6 on the season and 0-3 in league play.
Junior Breda Holland (Londonderry, N.H) had a six-point afternoon with a team-high five goals and an assist. Sophomore Annie Richards (Reading, Mass.) and freshman Taylor Cobain (Smithfield, R.I.) each finished with five points. Richards had two goals and three helpers while Cobain had four goals and an assist. Senior Molly Beck (Old Saybrook, Conn.) extended her point streak to nine games with a goal and three assists. During the nine-game point streak, she has 22 goals and nine assists.
The Yellow Jackets scored first with 1:34 gone off the clock in the game on a tally by Molly Leavitt. The Hawks went on a 6-1 lead over the next eight minutes. Richards tied the game 14 seconds after American International scored with an assist from Beck. Holland gave Saint Anselm the lead at the 3:25 mark.
Cobain and Holland added two goals while freshman Jenna Balboni (Billerica, Mass.) scored twice to put Saint Anselm 6-1 with 20:44 to play in the half. Mary Bates scored with 19:07 to play in the opening stanza to bring the visitors with four goals. A pair of extra player goals by Cobain and Richards, followed by a tally sophomore Caroline Villareal (Portsmouth, R.I.) made it 10-2 in favor of the Hawks with 8:32 remaining in the half.
Mikayla Demanche scored twice to bring her team within six tallies with just over five minutes to play in the half, before Holland wrapped up the first half scoring with 4:04 remaining.
The Hawks went ahead 15-4 in the first 11:56 of the second half with four straight goals. Sophomore Sarah Morey (Natick, Mass.) started things with the opening goal of the stanza with Cobain, Balboni, and Beck scoring the next three. Reagan Nichols scored for the visitors halfway through the second stanza before Holland scored the next two for the Hawks, the latter coming with 8:25 to play in regulation.
Demanche found the back of the net for the final goal by the Yellow Jackets with just over six minutes to play before freshman Liza Palumbo (Sudbury, Mass.) rounded out the scoring for the Hawks.
Junior Bailee Pudvar (Shelburne, Vt.) finished with six saves in net for her fifth win of the season. Defensively, the Hawks caused nine turnovers in the game. Junior Becca Shea (Middleton, Mass.) and Cobain each forced three. Chelsea Davis finished with 10 saves for the visitors. Saint Anselm won 15 of the games 26 draws and were successful on 16 of 18 clear attempts.
Saint Anselm returns to action on Wednesday, Mar. 27 when the Hawks welcome cross-town rival Southern New Hampshire University to Grappone Stadium for a 7 p.m. NE10 contest.
