WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Freshmen Jess Perkins (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and Meghan Golden each won both of their matches to lead the Saint Anselm College women's tennis team to Sunday afternoon's 6-3 victory at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center.
The Hawks improve to 1-2 both on the season and in Northeast-10 play, while the Chargers drop to 0-2, 0-2 NE-10.
Perkins won the first singles match of her collegiate career with a 6-0, 6-1 victory against Alexandra Sharshakov at No. 1. Golden also captured her first career win as she downed Samantha Nigri, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 at No. 2 singles. Junior Leah Fitzgerald (Bedford, N.H.) came back after dropping the first set to Sarah Burzin to win 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 at No. 5 singles.
In doubles action, Perkins teamed with classmate Ashley Sulkin for an 8-5 victory against Lindsey Conley and Sharshakov at No. 1. Golden joined senior Kate Martin (Hudson, N.H.) in the No. 2 slot to ground Nigri and Alexia Petruzziello, 8-4. The Hawks earned the doubles sweep as sophomore Katie Roberts (So. Windsor, Conn.) and senior April Regan (Berlin, Conn.) took out Burzin and Christina Santos, 8-5, at No. 3.
The Hawks return to action Tuesday, Sept. 16 at 3 p.m. when they play host to Franklin Pierce University.
