EASTON, Mass. – Regionally-ranked Stonehill College handed the Saint Anselm College women's tennis team a 9-0 defeat in Northeast-10 Conference play on Saturday afternoon at Sally Blair Ames Sports Complex.
Stonehill (6-0, 5-0 NE10) entered the match ranked No. 6 in the Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II East Region rankings and swept Saint Anselm (2-4, 1-4 NE10) to stay unbeaten this season. Victoria Barbetta, Alexandra Vo, Isabelle Porter, Colleen O'Donnell and Kate Cunningham were each victorious in both singles and doubles for the Skyhawks.
The pairs of Vo and Annelise Howick and O'Donnell and Cunningham recorded 8-2 and 8-0 victories at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, respectively, while the No. 1 doubles match came down to the wire. At the top spot, Barbetta and Porter outlasted Jess Perkins and Kaitlin Hughes in a tiebreaker, taking the match 9-8 (7-5).
All six of Stonehill's wins in singles came in straight sets. Meghan Golden pushed Downey in the second set, but fell 6-0, 7-5 at No. 4 singles. Tess Malerbi put three games on the board in each set against Vo at No. 2 singles, going down 6-3, 6-3. In a match between two of the NE10's top players, Perkins saw her five-match winning streak come to an end, suffering her first loss of the season by a 6-1, 6-0 score against Barbetta.
Saint Anselm is right back at it on Sunday, Oct. 1 with a 2:30 p.m. match at Franklin Pierce.
