WORCESTER, Mass. – The Saint Anselm College women's tennis team saw its two-match winning streak in the Northeast-10 Conference come to an end with a 6-3 loss at Assumption College on Saturday afternoon at Assumption Tennis Courts.
Saint Anselm (4-5, 3-5 NE10) got a doubles win from Tess Malerbi and Meghan Golden and singles victories from Jess Perkins and Kaitlin Hughes in the defeat. Assumption (9-1, 7-1 NE10) ran its winning streak to five behind two wins apiece from Julia Chappell and Camille Latoni.
The Hawks took a point from doubles after Malerbi and Golden slipped past Maria Monje and Valeria Sanchez in a tiebreaker, 9-8 (7-4), at No. 2 doubles for their third-straight win. The pairs of Chappell and Cassie Burbine and Latoni and Paige Benoit posted wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles to give the Greyhounds the advantage going into singles.
In singles, Perkins and Hughes each picked up their third consecutive victories for the Hawks. Perkins eased past Burbine, 6-0, 6-0, to improve to 8-1 on the season, with five of the wins coming in 6-0, 6-0 fashion. After a comfortable first set, Hughes closed out Benoit in a second-set tiebreaker for a 6-1, 7-6 (7-5) win at No. 3 singles.
Chappell, Sanchez, Latoni and Veronica Op earned straight-set wins at the other four singles positions for Assumption, as the hosts remained unbeaten this season on their home courts (7-0).
Saint Anselm hosts American International College on Wednesday, Oct. 11 at 3 p.m. at South Tennis Courts.
