KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Senior Jess Perkins became the first player in program history to reach the 100-win milestone for the Saint Anselm College women's tennis team in a 5-4 loss to Ursinus College on Tuesday at Oak Street Park Community Center.
Perkins entered the match with 98 combined singles and doubles victories and won both her matches to reach the century mark. Perkins recorded 100 wins in just 130 career matches and holds record of 58-10 in singles and 42-20 in doubles during her time on the Hilltop. Saint Anselm (5-10) took a 2-1 lead after doubles before Ursinus (1-1) rallied with four wins in singles to claim the team win.
In doubles, the Hawks got wins at No. 1 doubles from Perkins and Kaitlin Hughes and from the third-doubles tandem of Kayla Hodas and Eleni Petromelis to take a 2-1 advantage after Ursinus won at No. 2 doubles. Hodas and Petromelis evened the match at 1-1 with an 8-2 victory before Perkins and Hughes won 8-4 at the top spot for their second-straight win.
The Bears won four of the first five singles matches to finish to wrap up the victory, getting wins from Ashley Nguyen, Aileen BeVard, Ariel Danziger and the clincher from Summer Burkholder in a super tiebreak at No. 6 singles. Perkins posted her seventh 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 1 singles to provide another point and Hodas outlasted Madisen Harvey, 7-5, 7-5, at No. 5 singles in the last match on court. Perkins is now 13-2 on the season, while Hodas moved to 3-2 in singles play.
After a day off, the Hawks play twice on Thursday, March 8, facing Aquinas at 8 a.m. and Otterbein at 7 p.m.
