MANCHESTER, N.H. – Visiting Adelphi University hit .310 in the match to defeat the Saint Anselm College volleyball team, 25-19, 25-19, 25-16 in Northeast-10 Conference play on Friday evening at Stoutenburgh Gymnasium.
McKenna Clawson led the way for Adelphi (10-11, 6-3 NE10) with 15 kills and 12 digs and Leilani Vazquez had eight kills and 13 digs for the visitors. Saint Anselm (14-9, 7-4 NE10) saw its three-match home winning streak come to an end despite a double-double of 27 assists and 16 digs from Jewel Hays.
Megan Manierski orchestrated the Adelphi offense with 37 assists and Cara McKenzie pitched in with seven kills and just one error on 11 swings (.545). Katarina Warburton joined Vazquez and Clawson in double figures in digs with a dozen.
The Panthers had a pair of five-point leads early in the first set but the Hawks hung around, using a 4-1 run to get within 16-14 at an Adelphi timeout. Out of the break, Adelphi went on a 5-2 run of its own to reclaim a five-point advantage and the visitors closed out the set with back-to-back blocks.
A 7-4 lead by Adelphi was the only lead larger than two points for either team until a late spurt by the Panthers. The score was locked at 18-18 before the Panthers won seven of the final eight points to go up two sets. Adelphi hit .441 without an error in the second set.
Adelphi broke open an 11-11 tie in the third set on a 6-0 run on Warburton's serve with Victoria Cast contributing three kills in the run. Saint Anselm hit a match-best .233 in the third set but could not overcome the deficit as the Panthers closed out the sweep.
The Hawks are on the road at Franklin Pierce on Tuesday, Oct. 31 at 7 p.m.
