Volleyball splits Sunday slate at Southern N.H.

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Sophomore Elise Jolly (Merrimack, N.H.) posted 27 kills on the day as the Saint Anselm College women's volleyball team split a non-conference doubleheader on Sunday at Southern New Hampshire University.

Saint Anselm (2-1) was downed by Southern New Hampshire in four sets after posting a 3-1 victory against Shepherd University in the opener. The Penmen (1-2) picked up their first win of the year over the Hawks while Shepherd departs New Hampshire with a 2-1 record.

The Hawks return to action this Friday, Aug. 31 in East Stroudsburg, Pa., taking on Queens (N.Y.) and Caldwell on the campus of East Stroudsburg University starting at 11 a.m.

Jolly posted 27 kills and committed only seven errors for a team-leading .345 hitting percentage. She also stepped up on defense, registering 11 blocks across eight sets on the day. Junior Catie McCarthy (Broad Run, Va.) led the Hawks with 30 total kills while junior Madison Sollows (West Barnstable, Mass.) hammered home five service aces and contributed 21 kills herself.

The Hawks cruised to a 2-0 lead in the opening match against Shepherd. In the first set, the Hawks and Rams were tied at 13 before Saint Anselm ran off 12 of the matches next 16 points. The Hawks controlled the second set, leading by as many as 10 points before Shepherd rallied to cut the score to 23-21. Jolly would contribute two kills down the stretch, helping the Hawks to their two-set lead.

Saint Anselm sprinted out to a 6-1 lead in the third set but Shepherd rallied back to take the third set win, despite the Hawks cutting the Rams lead to 20-19 late.

McCarthy carried her team in the fourth set, recording seven of her team's 15 kills, while senior Jewel Hays (Aliso Viejo, Calif.) handed out 14 assists and added a service ace. Freshman Nique D'Ancona (Larkspur, Calif.) led the effort defensively with five digs.

Peyton Lindblad led Shepherd with 14 kills while Jessica Karcz was responsible for 37 assists. Imani Major was a force defensively with 16 digs.

Against the Penmen, the Hawks battled the hosts to a 26-24 loss. Ahead by a 22-20 margin late in the opener, the Penmen stunned Saint Anselm with six of the game's next eight points to take the win. The first set had a total of 10 tied scores and five lead changes.

With each team's offense posting identical offensive numbers as a team (12-6-36, .167), the Hawks were able to eke out a three-point victory to draw the match even at one.

With the score tied at 20 in the third set, Southern New Hampshire racked up five of the game's next six points to take a 2-1 lead in the match. Down by a 24-16 margin in the fourth set, the Hawks captured seven straight points with freshman Desi D'Ancona (Larkspur, Calif.) serving but could not complete the comeback. Out of those seven points, sophomore Jordan Schamp (Plymouth, Mich.) had five kills.

Baylee Lippincott and Irem Bat each tallied 13 kills for the Penmen. Jessica Dillon handed out 27 assists with Shaira Sanabria scooping up 23 digs.
