BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – The Saint Anselm College women's volleyball team took down LIU Post, 3-1, in a non-conference tilt at the Pratt Center on Saturday afternoon.
The Hawks won by the set scores of 24-18, 24-26, 24-19, and 25-17 while improving to 13-8 overall. The Pioneers fall to 15-11 overall.
Junior Sarah Lowery (Chicago, Ill.) had a strong day for the Hawks, tallying a career-high 21 kills to go along with 13 digs. Junior Catie McCarthy (Broad Run, Va.) had 10 kills and eight digs, while senior Jewel Hays (Aliso Viejo, Calif.) notched 46 assists. Junior Madison Sollows (West Barnstable, Mass.) and sophomore Holly Manchester (Lodi, Wis.) each finished the day with four block assists while sophomore Elise Jolly (Merrimack, N.H.) contributed six blocking assists and 12 kills.
The Hawks used a 13-kill performance to help them take the first set. After trailing early, Saint Anselm jumped out to a 9-4 lead. The visitors lead got as large as 18-10, before LIU Post battled back into the set. However, the Hawks took advantage of an attack error and a block by Manchester and McCarthy to close out the set.
The second set started well for the home team as they built a 7-0 lead early. The rest of the set was close as the Hawks tied the set at 11, thanks to back-to-back kills by Lowery. The teams were tied eight more times, before Saint Anselm took a 24-23 lead. However, LIU Post took the set on three-straight kills.
The Hawks used an offensive onslaught to take the third set. The team used 17 kills, a hitting percentage of .405, and limited themselves to a pair of attacking errors to take a 2-1 lead in the match. Saint Anselm trailed early and was down by a 7-5 margin before rallying to capture a 12-8 lead. From there on, the Hawks never trailed and went on to take the set.
In the fourth set, the Hawks held their opponent to a .079 hitting percentage while tallying 15 kills, registering an impressive percentage of .343 of their own. They never trailed once and built a 5-1 lead before extending that to a 10-5 advantage. Saint Anselm's largest lead of the set was 19-13 and LIU Post never got within more than five points as the Hawks took the set on three-straight attacking errors to end the match.
For the Pioneers, Lauren Kloos finished the afternoon with 18 kills while Rachel Londot had 14 kills and 11 digs. Kassie Akouri-Tejedor had 28 assists to go along with 11 digs while Abby Eckhardt helped her team with 21 digs and eight helpers.
Saint Anselm returns to the friendly confines of Stoutenburgh Gymnasium on Tuesday, Oct. 23 for a 7 p.m. Northeast-10 Conference matchup with Franklin Pierce University.
