MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College women's volleyball team swept Franklin Pierce University in Northeast-10 Conference action on Tuesday night from Stoutenburgh Gymnasium.
The set scores were 25-18, 25-13, and 25-22 in favor of the Hawks, who improve to 14-9 overall and 5-5 in NE10 action. The Ravens fall to 5-22 overall and 1-10 in league play.
Saint Anselm had a balanced attack on offense. Junior Madison Sollows (West Barnstable, Mass.) had nine kills along with three aces and three blocks while sophomore Elise Jolly (Merrimack, N.H.) had nine kills and four digs. Junior Catie McCarthy (Broad Run, Va.) had eight kills, four digs, and a pair of blocks while senior Jewel Hays (Aliso Viejo, Calif.) had 23 assists and 12 digs.
The Hawks used a .351 hitting percentage and 16 kills in the opening set. After neither team could pull away early, Saint Anselm had a stretch where they rattled off four straight points to take a 15-9 lead. The Hawks then got six straight kills to take a commanding 20-11 lead. An attack error followed by an ace and a kill closed out the set by the Hawks.
In the second set, Saint Anselm built a comfortable lead early and never looked back. The held Franklin Pierce to a -.032 percentage and hit an impressive .308 themselves. Errors built an 11-4 lead for the Hawks, followed by some strong offense to go ahead, 17-5.
In the final set, the Ravens built a 3-1 lead and led 8-5 at one point. However, the Hawks rallied back from the early deficit to tie things up at 8-8. The set was tied eight more times before Franklin Pierce took a 21-19 lead. From there, Saint Anselm used an ace, a kill and benefitted from an attacking error to take a 23-21 lead. The match point would end on a kill by the Hawks.
Saint Anselm hosts the Setters from Pace University on Friday, Oct. 26 from Stoutenburgh Gymnasium for a 6 p.m. NE10 tilt.
