MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College women's volleyball powered its way past regionally-ranked Pace University on Friday in straight sets.
Saint Anselm, who won the three-setter by scores of 25-16, 25-20 and 25-20, improves to 15-9 overall on the season, moving to 6-5 against Northeast-10 Conference opponents. Pace, listed in the latest NCAA Division II East Region rankings, falls to 18-7 overall and to 7-4 against league foes.
Junior Catie McCarthy (Broad Run, Va.) led the Hawks with a double-double, recording 12 kills and as many digs. Senior Jewel Hays (Aliso Viejo, Calif.) posted 30 assists and 10 digs with freshman libero Nique D'Ancona (Larkspur, Calif.) registering 16 digs on the match.
Saint Anselm sprinted out to a 6-1 lead in the first set and never looked back, building its lead to 14-7 and 21-14 before capturing a 25-16 victory. The Hawks hit a match-high .341 in the first set alone, hammering home 18 kills while committing only four errors on 41 swings.
The Hawks were down by as many as five points early in the second set, but ended up scoring nine of the game's next 11 points with junior Madison Sollows (West Barnstable, Mass.) serving for the Hawks. Another stretch of strong play for Saint Anselm yielded six-straight points with Hays serving, creating another 21-14 lead for the Hawks.
Saint Anselm cruised to a third set win, scoring eight of the stanza's first 11 points to claim the straight-set victory over the Setters.
Claudia Fontanet posted 15 digs and 10 kills to lead Pace.
The Hawks host Assumption on Saturday, Oct. 27 at 3 p.m. on Senior Day.
