NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Sophomore Elise Jolly (Nashua, N.H.) tallied a team-high 10 kills and hit .250 while junior Catie McCarthy (Broad Run, Va.) added nine kills for the Saint Anselm College women's volleyball team, but it was the Owls of Southern Connecticut State University who came away with the Northeast-10 Conference victory on Friday evening, defeating the Hawks 3-0 (25-20, 25-20, 25-20) at Pelz Gym.
The visiting Hawks (16-10, 7-6 NE10) stayed close with the host Owls (17-13, 9-4 NE10) early in the first set, but Southern Connecticut pulled in front midway through the set, building a six-point advantage (16-10). The Hawks pulled closer down the stretch and got within three, 23-20, but Southern Connecticut Rattled off the final two points for the first set victory.
The Hawks jumped out to an early 3-2 advantage in the second set, but the host Owls again build a sizable 18-6 lead midway through the frame. Saint Anselm battled back, cutting the deficit to just two, 22-20, but Southern Connecticut Scored the final three points of the set to take a 2-0 advantage.
Knotted at 12-12 midway through the third, the Owls used a 8-4 run to go in front 20-16. Back-to-back kills by sophomore Jordan Schamp (Plymouth, Mich.) again pulled Saint Anselm to within three, 23-20, but the Owls rattled off the final two points to clinch the straight set victory.
Senior Jewel Hays (Aliso Viejo, Calif.) tallied 33 assists on the evening to add to her program-record total and joined sophomore Rebecca Lai (Tortoli, Sardinia, Italy) as each collected a team-best nine digs on the evening.
The Hawks close out the regular season on Saturday, Nov. 3 at the University of New Haven. Match time against the Chargers is set for 5 p.m.
The NE10 standings and playoff seeding come down to the final day, with Saint Anselm in the hunt for its third consecutive trip to the postseason tournament.
