MANSFIELD, Mass. – The Saint Anselm College women's volleyball team had a trio of student-athletes receive All-Conference honors from the Northeast-10 Conference on Wednesday. Senior Jewel Hays (Aliso Viejo, Calif) earned Second Team All-Conference honors while juniors Catie McCarthy (Broad Run, Va.) and Madison Sollows (West Barnstable, Mass.) were Third Team All-Conference selections.
Hays earned her third-straight selection to the league's Second Team after a productive 2018 regular season where she ranked third in the NE10 in assists per set (10.41). During the season, she became the program's all-time leader in career assists, accomplishing the feat against Saint Rose on Oct. 13, and enters Friday's NE10 Semifinals game against Southern Conn. St. only 11 shy of 1,000 for the season. Across 26 matches, Hays also contributed 259 digs for an average of 2.73 digs per set, ranking within the top-30 in the conference.
Against Pace on Sept. 8 in a five-set victory, Hays posted a career-high 63 assists and throughout the season, she racked up 13 double-doubles while reaching 40-plus assists on 13 separate occasions. During a stellar four-year career, Hays has appeared in nearly 400 sets and her 9.41 assists per set is the program record for Saint Anselm. Her 960 career digs also places her firmly within the top-10 in team history,
McCarthy makes her first appearance as an All-Conference selection after a stellar junior season where she ranked eighth in the NE10 in kills per set (3.22). She also notched career-highs in digs (279), digs per set (2.74), kills (328) and service aces (28), leading the team in kills and kills per set in 2018. Her 279 digs ranks her second on the team and she recorded a season-best 21 kills against Pace on Sept. 8.
In 293 career sets, McCarthy has tallied 742 career kills and has averaged 2.53 kills per set to rank sixth all-time in team history. Her 328 kills to date stands as the fifth-most in a single season by a Hawks student-athlete, as does her 3.22 kills per set.
Sollows picked up Third Team All-Conference honors for the third time with Wednesday's announcement. Appearing in all 28 matches for the Hawks, she led all NE10 student-athletes with a .376 hitting percentage, hammering home 215 kills against only 41 errors. She was also a force at the net for the Hawks, throwing up 63 total blocks to rank within the top-15 in the conference. Her .339 career attacking percentage ranks her first in team history and her 179 block assists is tied for fourth dating back to the program's inception in 1993.
Saint Anselm upset the top-seeded Chargers of the University of New Haven on Tuesday, Nov. 6 in the NE10 Tournament Quarterfinals, advancing to the conference semifinals for the second-straight year. Saint Anselm will face Southern Connecticut State University on Friday, Nov. 9 in Garden City, N.Y. at 7:30 p.m.
