MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College women's volleyball team swept cross-town rival Southern New Hampshire, 3-0, in Northeast-10 Conference action on Tuesday night. The Hawks captured their first three-set sweep of the Penmen since Sept. 28, 2007.
The set scores were 25-17, 25-22 and 25-9 in favor of the Hawks, who picked up their third straight victory. Saint Anselm also earned its sixth straight-set win of the season, improving to 12-7 and 4-1 in conference play. The hosts fall to 8-8 overall and 2-2 in the NE10. The win gave Saint Anselm another point in the Queen City Cup standings which is now tied at four.
Junior Elise Jolly (Merrimack, N.H.) led the team with 10 kills with senior Catie McCarthy (Warrenton, Va.) registering nine and passing 3,000 career attacks. McCarthy stands only eight kills away from reaching 1,000 across a four-year career. Freshman Michelle Henwood (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) totaled 29 assists in the winning effort.
The Hawks and Penmen were tied at 11 in the first set before Saint Anselm recorded three straight points, thanks to one kill each by Henwood and sophomore Nique D'Ancona (Corte Madera, Calif.). After the short burst that created a 15-13 Hawks advantage, Saint Anselm earned 10 of the final 14 points of the match to take a 25-17 triumph.
In the second set, the Penmen would take the early lead with a 9-4 charge. The Hawks would mount a comeback to tie the set at 15 with help from two kills by senior Madison Sollows (Barnstable, Mass.) and Jolly. Tied at 19, Saint Anselm went on a late 6-3 charge after the Penmen hit the net three times to capture the 25-22 comeback victory.
Saint Anselm controlled the entire third set from the start as they held a 11-2 lead following two McCarthy kills. Ahead 11-4, the Hawks would keep the pressure on to earn the final 13 of 18 points to gain a 25-9 victory. In that final stretch, junior Holly Manchester (Lori, Wis.) had three kills as the Hawks posted a dominant .481 hitting percentage.
Baylee Lippincott and Juliana Pacini combined for 17 kills. Joanne Coffey assisted on 14 of the Penmen's 22 kills. Angela Crosetti finished the day with a team-high 15 digs.
The Hawks will travel to Roberts Wesleyan for a tri-match against Daemen and the host Redhawks on Saturday, Oct. 19 with matches at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.
